Future Teachers of America

Future Teachers of America is a campus-wide club at SMWC, geared toward education majors (or anyone working with children), to help one gain professional skills and qualities through classroom experience and various interactive club and campus events.  Our mission is to help our future educators become more knowledgeable in the classroom by giving them opportunities to interact in local classroom experiences.

Read Across America is a nationwide event celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday where children of various ages read books by Dr. Seuss. FTA adds to the experience by working with elementary students at West Vigo Elementary by incorporating lesson plans that go along with the themed book of that particular year. Pictures Coming Soon!

Debbie Clement is a national award winning children's author/illustrator that travels around the country teaching students and adults alike interactive and engaging ways to work with children through her own books and songs.  She uses her own life experiences and successes to help others gain knowledge in this phenomenal field. This event will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in the Ballroom of Le Fer from 1:00-3:00 p.m.  The event is open to all SMWC students.

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH)

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is proud to announce the 7th Annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference on Saturday, November 1, 2014!

The conference will be in Hulman Hall from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The online registration for the conference will open in October, 2014 and updated conference workshops and information will be available at www.smwc.edu/eyh also in October.

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a national organization (http://www.expandingyourhorizons.org) and the conference at SMWC is the only one in this region of Indiana. It is a one-day conference designed to motivate young women’s interest in science, technology, engineering and math and is open to young women in 6th, 7th and 8th grade.

The keynote speaker and the workshop presenters are women role models who not only do exciting hands-on activities, but will also talk about their own career paths and how they became interested in STEM.  Dr. Anneliese Payne from the Education Department directs the conference and Dr. Monique Bate Akoachere  from the Mathematics and Sciences Department  hosts a chemistry-based science show in the afternoon.  There is a drawing for door prizes after the science show.
