Why Study Music at The Woods?

For those who love playing, singing, composing and learning about music, the SMWC Music Area provides unique opportunities. The stately Conservatory of Music, built in 1913, combines the beauty of the past with current technology and equipment necessary for a comprehensive education in music. Marble halls and staircase surround the elegant 720-seat Cecilian Auditorium. The Conservatory of Music also houses a recently acquired Yamaha keyboard lab (featuring CVP-301 Clavinovas) and a state-of-the-art music technology lab (featuring iMac computers, Apogee audio interfaces, M-Audio MIDI keyboards, JBL monitor speakers, Sennheiser headphones and Finale, Garage Band, and Pro Tools software).

Practice facilities, studios, and classrooms are spacious and numerous, with windows overlooking the natural beauty of the SMWC campus. The professionally-active faculty take an involved interest in the students' musical progress. Music classes are small enough to allow individualized instruction and average from three to nine students. A substantial collection of CDs, recordings, and musical scores are located in the lower level of the Rooney Library.
