The general core business courses attunes you to broad business issues.

The specific coursework in accounting prepares you for the technical and professional competencies required of the accounting profession.

Career possibilities

Positions open to you as a new graduate include:

  • Staff accountant - entry level at corporate or not-for-profit setting
  • Cost accountant - entry level
  • Property accountant - entry level

With work experience and additional appropriate certifications, you will prepare yourself for a well-paid career such as:

  • Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
  • Controller
  • Financial Analyst
  • Internal Auditor

Certifications

The Accounting Major also provides the foundation for specialized certifications:

  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
  • Certified Financial Management(CFM)
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)

In most states, preparation for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination requires an additional 25 semester hours beyond the 125 semester hours required for the baccalaureate degree. To prepare yourself for the CPA examination, you can add courses to this major or pursue the Accounting Information Systems major.
