Art and Art Education at The Woods

As a liberal arts college since its beginning in 1840, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College prides itself in providing an atmosphere where the arts can flourish. All instruction is founded on traditional skills of figure study and art history, and encourages development of one's own style or personal philosophy of art. Exploration is part of this learning experience. SMWC's liberal arts base not only encourages exploration, but also provides the means by which to begin.

The department of performing and visual arts supports majors/minors in the following:

Facilities

The art area is housed in Hulman Hall. There are up-to-date facilities for the photography and graphic design studios. The design studio houses a Macintosh (mac) lab, which includes 11 macs, scanner, color laser printer, 24 inch large-format printer, as well as digital SLR cameras. There is a large ceramics studio with a new state-of-the-art computerized kiln capable of firing large ceramic sculptures. There are also studios that house the drawing, design, and painting classes.

The college art gallery is located in the same wing as the art studios in Hulman Hall. There, professional artists from across the nation and students exhibit their work. Student artists also have the opportunity to learn about curating and gallery operations.

Scholarships

Creative Arts Scholarships are available to high school seniors or transferring college students with a desire to attend Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. The scholarships are renewable over four years based on satisfactory academic progress and recommendation from the department.
