Debt 101@MoneySmartWeek
Money Smart Week (MSW) Indiana 2008 is October 11-18!
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, a proud partner with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, brings debt experts to campus for Debt 101 of MoneySmart Week. Our day begins with a keynote address from Jackie Switzer, discussing the best way to organize your financing for college. Our activities continue with Karla Bensinger, Old National Bank, on a healthy credit life-style starting the day you graduate from college, followed by an SMWC alumna, Erin Alsman Robertson, class of 2000, on financial management.. The day will conclude with a panel of students and graduates sharing their experiences with managing their student loans.
An education is an investment that is often financed with scholarships, grants, loans, and credit cards. According to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, "two out of three college students graduate with debt and the average borrower who graduates from a public college owes $17,250 from student loans." (Volume 3, August 2006). Even worse, "the number of college graduates with at least $40,000 in student loan debt has increased 10-fold in the past decade."
