Women who concentrated on mastery of journalism in their college years work in a variety of fields including:

The study of journalism is an academic and life laboratory for refining or developing some basic talents and skills attractive to employers:

  • Excellent grammar, writing and communication skills are highly regarded by most employers.
  • The employee candidate who also demonstrates curiosity, interpersonal skills, integrity, good judgment, intelligence, energy, and an ability to produce under pressure on deadline is likely to succeed in the professional world.
  • Talent, persistence, initiative, assertiveness and enthusiasm-coupled with writing and communication abilities and computer knowledge-are highly valued.
  • At this college, we don't teach courses in persistence or enthusiasm. But we provide you with the framework to explore, develop and continue to grow in your expression of those qualities.

  • You ultimately determine how successful you will be.
    The student who is committed to the maximum college experience has ample opportunity to build her portfolio and gain practical experience for entry into the workplace.

  • With the increasing number of home-based businesses, many people who have a foundation in journalism, work in a professional setting for some years and then choose to freelance in a variety of areas, such as writing and editing. Some own communication-related businesses.

Journalism majors and minors are encouraged to work with the Career Development Office staff and to become familiar with professional experience opportunities and other resources. Professional experience opportunities include internships, externships, and supplemental learning experiences.
