Balanced scoring leads Pomeroys past UC-Clermont, 104-91

Led by Brittney Shaner’s 26 points and Chelsea Weaver’s double-double, the Pomeroy basketball team earned a well-deserved 104-91 home victory over the University of Cincinnati-Clermont on Saturday afternoon.
SMWC was able to outscore UC-Clermont in both halves, leading 51-41 at the break.
For the game, the Pomeroys shot 49% from the field in comparison to only 42% for the Cougars. SMWC hit a total of seven three-point shots, with five of them coming in the first half. Both teams secured a total of 50 rebounds each, with the Pomeroys having the edge in defensive boards (37-32). The Pomeroys were also able to get to the foul line more often than the Cougars, outscoring UC-Clermont by seven points.
Coming into Saturday’s contest, Shaner was only two steals shy of breaking the all-time individual record set by Chelsey Barron last season. Shaner finished the game with 5 steals, putting her total at 44 for the season and is now the new individual record holder in that category.
Weaver had one of her best games of the season adding a team-high 14 rebounds along with 15 points. Whitney Allen finished with 13 points, Sierra Lopez added 12, Brandi McDaniel chipped in 11, and Alaura McKemie tallied 10. A total of six players for the Pomeroys finished the game in double figures.
UC-Clermont was led by Ashley Keith with a game-high 28 points and Tess Jenike with 25. The Cougars also got a strong performance on the glass by Marissa Stutz who had a game-high 17 rebounds.
With the win, the Pomeroys end a two game losing streak and improve their record to 5-11. Their next game will take place on Friday, Jan. 11 when they travel to Belleville, Ill. in a match-up with USCAA power Lindenwood-Belleville. Tip-off time is set for 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) and will be the first game of six straight on the road.
