Pomeroys drop final home game to Wilberforce

Clinton, Ind. –  Despite having three players score in double figures, it wasn’t enough as the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team fell in its final home game of the season, 96-83 to Wilberforce University on Wednesday night.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs of Wilberforce opened the game with the first basket and were able to obtain a quick 10 point lead at the 14:54 mark of the first half.  The Pomeroys would cut the Lady Bulldog lead to three points at the 7:59 mark on a layup by Chelsea Weaver.  Wilberforce would respond and took a double digit 47-36 lead into halftime.

The Pomeroys were eager to cut into the Wilberforce lead in the second half, but were only able to get as close as 13 points on five separate occasions.  Wilberforce was able to weather a variety of Pomeroy comeback attempts and was able to finish off the game with a 13 point victory.

SMWC was led by Ja’Breena Gardner who scored a team-high 17 points.  She also finished with a team-high eight rebounds and game-high four steals.  Chelsea Weaver was one point shy of Gardner, finishing with 16 points and a game-high five assists.  The only other Pomeroy to score in double figures was Madeline Pea who chipped in 12 points and finished with six rebounds. 

Wilberforce had five players score in double figures and was led by Kendra Moss who scored a game-high 26 points and 17 rebounds.  Brittani Thomas and J’Neiya Burton also were able to secure double-double performances for the Lady Bulldogs.      

With the loss, the Pomeroys drop to 8-15 on the season.  Wilberforce improves to 9-19.  The Pomeroys have one game remaining of the regular season.  They will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio this Saturday (Feb. 22) in a matchup with USCAA foe UC-Clermont.  This will mark the second meeting between the two schools with SMWC winning the first matchup 89-82 back on Feb. 8.  Game time is set for a 1 p.m. start.
