Pomeroys fall at home to IU Northwest

Clinton, Ind. – Despite outscoring the visitors of IU Northwest in the second half, it wasn’t enough for the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College basketball team in an 89-72 home loss on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half, IU Northwest went on an early 12-0 run to start the game. SMWC’s Mikayla Metheny, who made her first return since her injury on Nov. 26, scored the first basket of the game for the Pomeroys and cut the RedHawk lead to 10 points. That was the closest the Pomeroys would get in the first half as IU Northwest was able to maintain a double digit lead throughout. At halftime, IU Northwest held a 54-36 lead.
In the second half, the visitors would continue to maintain their double-digit lead, extending it to as many as 36 points. However, the Pomeroys would not quit as they continued to fight their way back in the game. The Pomeroys ultimately cut the lead down to 17 points after going on a 23-4 run to end the game. SMWC would outscore the RedHawks in the half (36-35) and shot better from the field and from three-point range than its opponent.
The Pomeroys were led by Ja’Breena Gardner who scored a team-high 18 points. She also recorded a game-high four steals. Hailee Rittinger finished the game with 12 points, all coming from behind the three-point line. She also had a team-high seven rebounds. Metheny was the only other Pomeroy in double figures as she finished the game with 10 points.
IU Northwest was led by Megan Holland who scored a game-high 28 points. Danielle Zandstra led all players with a game-high 20 rebounds and earned herself a double-double with her 10 point effort.
With the loss, the Pomeroys are now 6-12 on the season. IU Northwest improves to 14-4. The Pomeroys will play its next game on the road when they travel to Wilberforce, Ohio in a matchup with Wilberforce University. The game will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
