Pomeroys stumble at Taylor Holiday Classic

Upland, Ind. – The basketball gods were not kind to the SMWC basketball team before the start of the 2014 New Year.  The Pomeroys were unable to come out victorious and fell against NAIA powers Taylor University and Marian University at the Taylor Holiday Classic. 

Taylor 110 SMWC 44 

In the first matchup against the host Trojans (5-9) on Monday night, the Pomeroys were unable to keep pace with one of the strongest teams in the Crossroads League of the NAIA.  Taylor scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back in a 110-44 victory over SMWC.  The Pomeroys shot 26% (18-67) from the field for the game and were only able to make 4-of-30 from three-point range. 

Mikayla Kinneer led the Pomeroys with a team-high 15 points.  The only other Pomeroy in double figures was Chelsea Weaver who finished with 11 points.  Sierra Lopez led SMWC with 8 rebounds.

All 12 players that entered the game for Taylor scored.  The Trojans were led by Emma Brattain who finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 18 points and 10 assists.  Savannah Bley also had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Taylor.

Marian 103 SMWC 72

On Tuesday’s noon matchup with Marian University (9-6), the Pomeroys would go back and forth with the Knights in a closely contested game in the first half.  Neither team would establish a big lead until the 3:47 mark of the half when the Pomeroys went up by four and were able to extend their lead by seven points at halftime. 

The second half was a different story for SMWC.  The Pomeroys would get outscored 62-24 in the second half and fell by a final score of 103-72.  SMWC shot 17% (5-28) from the field in the second half after shooting 47% (17-36) in the first half.  Marian shot 45% (23-51) from the field and were 6-of-11 from three-point range in the second stanza.  The Pomeroys were outrebounded 68-40 for the game.

Ja’Breena Gardner led SMWC with a game-high 18 points and 7 steals on the afternoon.  Alaura McKemie (11 pts.)  and Hailee Rittinger (10 pts.) also scored in double figures for the Pomeroys.  Chelsea Weaver led the team in rebounds with 8 for the game.  

Marian had five players and double figures and was led by Sarah Brewer and Lakan Hasser-Smith who both had 17 points. 

With both losses, the Pomeroys drop to 6-7 on the season.   SMWC will take a break to enjoy the New Years holiday before returning to action against USCAA opponent Robert-Morris Springfield on Saturday, Jan. 4.  Game time is set for a 2 p.m. start and will be played at the Clinton Recreation Center in Clinton, Ind.
