Pomeroys tame Lady Bearcats, 82-79
Feb. 6, 2013
In a tightly contested and physical contest, the Pomeroy basketball team was able to pull away late with an 82-79 home victory over the Lady Bearcats of Brescia University on Tuesday night.
After losing the first meeting with Brescia back on Jan. 19 (100-74), the Pomeroys were eager to make amends in their first home game in over a month.
In a first half that was very physical from the beginning, both teams were able to provide the fans with impressive offensive and defensive performances. Brescia took the early lead in the game before SMWC knotted things up at 11 with 12 minutes to go in the first half. Soon after, the Pomeroys were able to rattle off five straight points and pushed their advantage to five. In a back-and-forth contest for the remainder of the half, the game would be tied on three more occasions. With score reading 33-33 at the three minute mark, Brescia was able to finish out the half on a 9-4 run and took the lead into halftime (42-37).
To begin the second half, the Lady Bearcats were able to maintain the lead and extended their advantage to eight on two different occasions. However, the Pomeroys would battle back and tied the game at 59 with nine minutes remaining. With six minutes to go, SMWC was able take its first lead of the half at 65-64 and never trailed again. The biggest basket for the Pomeroys came at the 1:35 mark when Brescia had reached within three points. Brandi McDaniel’s basket as she was fouled pushed the lead to six after she converted the bonus free throw. The last minute of the game involved intentional fouling by Brescia in hopes of extending the game. The Pomeroys were able to convert free throws in that final minute. Brescia’s Evelyn Turner had one last attempt with 6.8 seconds left on the clock to tie the game on a three-point shot, but it fell short as time expired.
The Pomeroys were led by both Whitney Allen and Chelsea Weaver who poured in 21 point performances. Allen was 9-of-12 from the free throw line and 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Weaver corralled a team-high 13 rebounds for a double-double. Kristina Bruce had 16 points and McDaniel chipped in 13. Sierra Lopez was effective around the basket and finished with 12 total rebounds.
With the win, SMWC snaps a six game losing streak and improves to 3-2 at home. Overall, the Pomeroy’s record now sits at 6-17 while Brescia drops to 13-10 on the season.
The Pomeroy’s next home contest will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9 against Oakland City University. Game time is scheduled at 2 p.m. and will take place at the Clinton Recreation Center in Clinton, Ind. This game will also honor the careers of both seniors Brittney Shaner and Whitney Allen. There will be a small ceremony after the conclusion of the game.
