Pomeroys win home opener, 118-48

Clinton, Ind. – The SMWC basketball team opened up the 2013-14 season with an impressive display, topping the visiting Patriots of Southern State Community College 118-48 on Saturday afternoon.

In the first half, the Pomeroys dominated early and put up a blistering 73 points and held the Patriots to only 26 points by halftime.  The Pomeroys would ease up on the gas pedal in the second half and were able to close out the game comfortably.

The Pomeroys were led by freshman Je’Breena Gardner with 19 points and 7 assists.  Five other Pomeroys scored in double figures.  Sophomore Sierra Lopez and freshman Stephanie Moore registered 16 points apiece for SMWC.  Senior Madeline Pea poured in 14 points, freshman Na-Shaunda Rayford chipped in 13 points, and sophomore Mikayla Metheny finished with 10 points.  Freshman Kennedy Nelson led the Pomeroys in rebounds with 8 total boards. 

All 11 players for SMWC scored in the game.  As a team, SMWC created an astounding 40 Patriots turnovers as compared to only 7 miscues by the Pomeroys.  SMWC was also able to put up 28 more field goal attempts than Southern State Community College. 

The Pomeroy record is now 1-0 and will return to action with its second consecutive home game on Tuesday, Nov. 5 against Harris-Stowe State University.  The game is schedule for a 7 p.m. start.
