Pomeroys win second straight, top MacMurray College

Jacksonville, Ill. – Led by Stephanie Moore’s game-high 17 points, the SMWC basketball team won their second straight game at the MacMurray Classic, upending the host Highlanders 80-62 on Saturday afternoon. The Pomeroys were playing in their second of two games at the annual tournament.
Kennedy Nelson and Na-Shaunda Rayford were also able to score in double figures for the Pomeroys. Nelson finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds on the afternoon. Rayford chipped in 10 points and came away with a game-high 4 steals. Sierra Lopez was close to reaching a double-double, scoring 9 points and corralling 8 rebounds for the game.
MacMurray was led by Megan Duisen who had 16 points and 9 rebounds. KayDee Carmondy (12 pts.) and Gabrielle Douglas (10 pts.) also registered double figures for the Highlanders.
Lopez got the Pomeroys on the board early, scoring the first basket of the game. From there, SMWC held a small lead for much of the half. Both teams would trade baskets with Pomeroys only leading by single digits. At the 5:35 mark of the first half, SMWC would build its largest lead of the half after a Rayford jump shot to put the Pomeroys up by 12 points. MacMurray would trim the Pomeroy lead to seven going into halftime.
In the second half, the Pomeroys were able to extend their lead back to double-digits at the 15:06 mark and never looked back. They never trailed in the second half and were able to keep the Highlanders from making any kind of run to cut the deficit.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Ja’Breena Gardner was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performance over the weekend. The Pomeroys went 2-0 as they also defeated Greenville College on Friday night.
The Pomeroys are now 6-4 on the season and will look to win their third straight game when they play Earlham College on Thursday, Dec. 19. The game will be played at the Clinton Recreation Center in Clinton, Ind. beginning at 5:30 p.m.
