Pomeroys falter in home opener to Taylor, 116-79
A dominating first half for the visiting Trojans of Taylor University gave the Pomeroy basketball team all they could handle in a 116-79 home opening loss.
Unable to win the battle on the glass and cold shooting from the outside (1-13) in the first half gave the Trojans an early advantage. Taylor was able to shoot 45% from the field, with attempting 13 more field goals than the Pomeroys. At the half, the Pomeroys trailed 58-31.
It didn’t get much better in the second half against a very good Trojan squad. Taylor was able to get strong inside scoring and took advantage of Pomeroy turnovers. SMWC was able to keep up the defensive pressure, forcing the Trojans into turnovers of their own. Unfortunately, the Trojans were just too much and were able to come out victorious in the end.
Four Pomeroys will able to register double-digit performances. Brittney Shaner (20 pts.), Sierra Lopez (19 pts.), Kristina Bruce (11 pts.), and Mikayla Metheny (11 pts.) led the Pomeroys in the scoring column.
Taylor University was led by top scorers Erin Guarneri (23 pts.) and Tess Rudolph (20 pts.) who were able to combine for 43 points.
The Pomeroys will look for their first win of the season when they travel to New Albany, Ind. this weekend to take part in a tournament hosted by Indiana University-Southeast.
