Pomeroy Soccer
The Pomeroys are coming off their second straight trip to the USCAA National Finals and are looking again for a chance to improve on their 2009 second-place finish. The group of seniors that formed the heart of the team last year will be replaced by younger players stepping up, including a talented group on new freshmen. That core group of seniors included two-time USCAA All-American Erin Pugh and several others who earned national or local honors.
Opponents range from similar small colleges like Franklin College and St. Catharine College to larger institutions like Anderson University. More importantly, the Pomeroys continue to play successful, quality opponents like Hanover College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and will continue to steadily build the difficulty of the schedule.
The Pomeroys have had four players selected as USCAA All-Americans: Sarah Greenberg ’04, formerly of Bloomington South High School, Sara Guinn, formerly of South Vermillion High School, Lauren Sullivan ‘09, and current senior Erin Pugh, both formerly of Terre Haute North Vigo. The last season saw five more players named as USCAA Academic All-Americans: April Baranowski, Maureen Brown, Emily Contreraz, Erin Pugh, and Britt Simmerman. They are part of a long tradition of Woods soccer players setting high standards for academic achievement and student leadership. Even more importantly, they pride themselves on being a close-knit, supportive team.
The success of the team is gathering momentum. Even with the challenges of rebuilding this year, the Pomeroys will continue the trend of attacking possession soccer, scoring goals, winning matches, and giving our players great competitive experiences.
Home matches are played on our match field located at the northwest corner of campus, with a separate adjoining training field; both are part of the beautiful soccer/softball complex.
