Castellanos signs letter of intent with SMWC
April 14, 2014
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College head soccer coach Mike Aycock is proud to announce a new addition to the Pomeroy soccer team. On Thursday, April 10, Yadira Castellanos signed a letter of intent to join the Pomeroys for the 2014 season.
Castellanos is currently a senior at Griffith High School in Griffith, Ind. A longtime standout for the Panthers, Castellanos has made a name for herself as a talented and efficient midfielder, compiling an impressive list of honors. She has been named Most Valuable Player for the Panthers and was named to the prestigious Indiana Soccer Coaches Association (ISCA) Girls Top Team for the region in 2012. In 2013, she was named Second Team All-Conference, Second Team All-District, and many times named to district teams by the local media. She has also been a key player with her Millennium Soccer Association (MSA) club team in Northwest Indiana.
Just as importantly, Castellanos is also an excellent student who has been awarded the Woods Scholarship at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College for her academic achievements and will be a welcome addition to the college.
Aycock sees her as a perfect fit for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College: “Yadi is the exactly the kind of student athlete that we’re looking for. She brings some very high levels of skill, athleticism, and experience to the team, but, beyond that, a physical presence and competitiveness that few players her age possess. Her speed of decision making is very high. Add to this that she’s a great student, has already demonstrated leadership in teams, and is a fantastic young woman, and you have a person who will make a big impact at The Woods. We’re very fortunate to have her, and I expect that she will quickly become a key player for us.”
Yadira is the daughter of Abel and Teresa Castellanos and plans to major in criminology at SMWC.
