Pomeroys pick up first win of the season
Sept. 9, 2013
Berrien Springs, Mich. - The SMWC soccer team traveled to Berrien Springs to play the Cardinals of Andrews University on a beautiful Sunday afternoon yesterday. Rebounding from a difficult match on Friday (6-3 loss to Franklin), they dominated possession in a 7-0 victory to even their record at 1-1. It was the first regular season shutout for freshman goalkeeper Georgie Macy and a four-goal game for sophomore striker Amanda Loebker.
In the first half, Kylee White opened the scoring on an angled ball slotted through to her run from Alejandra Tellez in the 5th minute. The Pomeroys struck again in the 10th minute, as Amanda Loebker scored on an assist by Samantha Morrison. Though the game was a little ragged in the opening minutes, the Pomeroys held a powerful advantage in possession and reeled off three more goals, still in the first 20 minutes of the game. Amanda Loebker scored two more, on assists from Kylee White and Samantha Morrison, and Jordan Bray won a ball in the attacking third and took it through the last defenders herself, beating the keeper at the 20 minute mark for the last score of the half.
Unsatisfied with their spacing and passing in the first half, the Pomeroys came out in the second half to clean up their possession. They succeeded, stringing together some 6- to 10-pass sequences that both kept the ball in space and set up some good scoring opportunities. The action led to two second-half goals for the Pomeroys, one for Amanda Loebker in the 54th minute on a pass delivered by Joy Jakaitis, and one in the 65th minute by Denae Sallis, unassisted. Sallis’ goal is the first of her career. All 18 players were also able to see much playing time by the conclusion of the game.
The Pomeroys return to action at home against Anderson University on Saturday, September 14. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
