Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College head soccer coach Mike Aycock is proud to announce a new addition to the Pomeroy soccer team.  On Tuesday, April 15, Shannon Sonderman signed a letter of intent to join the Pomeroys for the 2014 season.

Sonderman is currently a senior at Jasper High School in Jasper, Ind.  She has established herself as a talented goalkeeper, team leader, and outstanding student. Twice named All-Conference in the Big Eight, she was also honored with the Wildcats’ Coach’s Award in 2013, Mental Attitude Award in 2012, and Most Improved Player Award in 2011. Her ability to manage defenses and snuff out threats early has won her considerable attention, including being named to the 2013 Indiana Girls Soccer Watch List.

Sonderman is also a distinguished leader in her school and church. A member of the National Honor Society, she has also served in a number of student organizations including SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and as Vice President and Secretary of her local 4-H Club. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College selected her among an outstanding group of candidates for the prestigious Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship. She has distinguished herself in choir competitions as the Outstanding Freshman and Outstanding Junior at Jasper High School, collecting four gold and two silver medals at state ISSHA competitions. In 2012, she won the Saint Cecilia Sing Award, and in 2014 the Saint Maria Goretti Award.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is fortunate to have a scholar athlete of Shannon Sonderman’s caliber. Aycock has high praise for her accomplishments and promise: “Shannon is a very solid shot stopper and has a lot of tactical awareness for a high school goalkeeper. Her ability to get off her line and be active with her defense is impressive. We look forward to her making an impact right away for the Pomeroys.”

Shannon is the daughter of John and Judy Sonderman and plans to major in education at SMWC.
