Undermanned Pomeroys drop second straight

Oct. 17, 2013

Midway, Ky. - Playing without three of its key players, the SMWC soccer team was unable to maintain its 1-0 first half lead, falling to host Midway College 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pomeroys were undermanned in the match, missing goalkeeper Georgie Macy, defender Dulce Chavez, and midfielder Julie Debish.  Adding insult to injury, the Pomeroys lost another key player as midfielder Jandra Tellez went down with an ankle injury late in the first half and did not return.

In the first half, the Pomeorys were able gain an edge in possession, making 23 trips in their attacking third compared to Midway’s 15.  Amanda Loebker had some point blank shots early in the half that were unable to fall; one shot that rattled off the crossbar.  However, it was Samantha Morrison who would get the first goal of the match in the 24th minute off a feed from Joy Jakaitis.  Morrison was able to beat the Midway goalkeeper on a breakaway giving the Pomeroys the lead at the half.

The tide would turn in the second half as Midway turned up the pressure and were able to create many dangerous chances in their attacking third.  Out possessing the Pomeroys at times, the Eagles were able to tie up the game in the 60th minute with a goal by Midway’s Ashley Vanhooser.  Pomeroy goalkeeper Whitney Teeters was only able to get a finger on the shot as the ball went over her head.  With five minutes left, Midway was able to grab the lead on goal by Lorna Mason with a low shot at the goal.  SMWC had a few chances late to tie the score, but were unable to come through in the end.

Whitney Teeters finished with four saves on the afternoon.

The Pomeroys are now 4-5-1 and travel to St. Catharine College on Saturday, October 19.  Game time is set for a 2 p.m. start.
