Pomeroy softball ready for USCAA National Championships

The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women’s softball team will open up the 2014 USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) National Softball Championships today (Monday, May 12) in Akron, Ohio.  The Pomeroys enter the double elimination tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and will play at 6 p.m. vs. the winner between No. 8 seed Penn State-Mont Alto and No. 9 seed Concordia College-Alabama.

The Pomeroys were ranked No. 1 in the USCAA Softball Coaches Poll throughout the regular season.  With a 24-16 record, SMWC is looking to win its first national title since 2008.  The eight-time USCAA champions have been national runners-up three out of the past four years.

Sophomore Sarah Burnham leads the Pomeroy offense and ranks in the top-5 in the USCAA in triples (5), doubles (19), hits (53), and at bats (139).  She leads the Pomeroys with a .381 batting average.  Junior pitcher Brooke Jordan ranks third in the USCAA in total wins (14) and third in total strikeouts (125).  She finished the regular season with a 2.96 ERA. 

The tournament runs through Wednesday, May 14 and will be played at Firestone Stadium on the campus of Akron University.
