Pomeroys drop pair to Missouri Baptist

March 20, 2014

St. Louis, Mo. – After going 4-1 in Elizabethtown, Ky. and winning six of their last seven games (including games in Vero Beach, Fla.), the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women’s softball team was unable to extend its streak of wins, dropping a pair of games to Missouri Baptist College on Wednesday afternoon.  The Pomeroys fell 2-1 in the first game and 6-1 in the second game.

Missouri Baptist 2 SMWC 1

SMWC would take the first lead of a scoreless game in the top of the third after a Brooke Jordan single scored Carly Painter to give the Pomeroys the early 1-0 lead.  Missouri Baptist (10-10) would respond in the bottom of the same inning after Mariah Randazzo doubled and scored Brittany Edelen to knot the game at one.

The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Missouri Baptist’s Mackenzie Friedly singled to shallow right, scoring Deanna Peters to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.   The Pomeroys would come up empty handed in the top of the seventh after Painter struck out swinging to end the game.

In 6.0 innings pitched, SMWC’s Brooke Jordan finished with 3 strikeouts, 1 walk, and allowed 2 earned runs.

Missouri Baptist 6 SMWC 1

In the second game, Missouri Baptist would get on the board early, scoring in the bottom of the first off a Megan Medcalf single to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.  The Pomeroys would respond in the top of the second when a Carly Painter double scored Shelby Turner to tie things up 1-1.  The Spartans would regain the lead, scoring in the bottom of the second and fourth inning to put Missouri Baptist ahead 3-1 after four innings.

Missouri Baptist would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, extending its lead 6-1.  The Pomeroy’s last chance to make a comeback fell short in the top of the seventh inning and the game concluded on a Ciara McClain flyout.

In 6.0 innings pitched, SMWC's Sarah Burnham finished with 3 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 5 earned runs.

The Pomeroy record is now at 9-7 and will face USCAA foe Lindenwood Belleville tomorrow (Thursday) beginning at 5 p.m. (EST).  The doubleheader will have a live audio stream.  Those wishing to listen to the game can follow along by visiting the following website: www.prepcasts.com/collegecasts/
