Pomeroys fall in doubleheader at Marian

Indianapolis, Ind. – In a battle of two teams with winning records, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women’s softball team came away on the wrong end of identical 3-2 scores to the Knights of Marian University on Wednesday afternoon. The Pomeroys dropped a pair of games for the first time since a doubleheader with Purdue University-Calumet on April 11.

In game one, Marian (22-19) would be the first to get on the board in the bottom of the second off an RBI triple to give the home side an early 1-0 lead. After three scoreless innings for SMWC, the Pomeroys would strike back with a run of their own in the fourth. Ciara McClain would score off a Sarah Burnham RBI double to draw the game even at 1-1.
Marian would take a 2-1 lead in the fifth with an RBI single, but the Pomeroys would respond once again. SMWC would tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth when Sarah Burnham hit her second RBI double of the game.
Unfortunately, a leadoff walk in the seventh for the Pomeroys would turn out to be the decisive run that would win the game for the Knights. With two outs, an RBI single to right-center field brought home the go-ahead run, giving the Knights a walk-off 3-2 victory.
In 6.2 innings pitched, Jordan (13-7) finished with 5 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 2 earned runs off 6 hits.
The Pomeroys finished the game with 11 hits and stranded 12 base runners. Marian had 6 hits and stranded only 4.

In game two, the Pomeroys would be the first to get on the scoreboard in the second. Breanna Lange’s RBI fielder’s choice would score Kirby Schuble to put the Pomeroys up 1-0.
The one-run lead wouldn’t last long as Marian (23-19) would plate three runs in the fourth. The Knights would score off an RBI single and a 2 RBI homerun to give the home side the 3-1 advantage.
The Pomeroys would get within one run in the seventh when Carly Painter would score off a two-out Emma Riffe RBI fielder’s choice. With runners on first and second, McClain would strikeout and register the Pomeroy’s last out and the game would conclude with a 3-2 victory for Marian on their Senior Day.
In 4.0 innings pitched, Burnham (10-8) finished with 2 strikeouts, 0 walks, and 3 earned runs off 6 hits. Jordan would come in relief for Burnham in the fifth and pitch 2.0 innings. She struck out 2 and allowed 0 runs.
After both games today, the Pomeroy record now sits at 23-15. The Pomeroys have one regular season doubleheader left on the schedule. They will play Brescia University on Saturday, April 26 in Owensboro, Ky. The first of two games is scheduled for a 2 p.m. (EST) start.
