Pomeroys sweep cross-town rival Rose-Hulman

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. – Highlighted by two three-run home runs by Carly Painter and Kirby Schuble, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women’s softball team swept its cross-town rival Rose-Hulman on Wednesday afternoon. The Pomeroys would win the first game 10-0 and second game 11-1 in five innings. SMWC would outscore Rose-Hulman 21-1 and outhit the visitors 19-5 in both games. The Pomeroys swept the series for the first time since 2012 and now lead the all-time series 14-8.

In the first game, the Pomeroys would be the first to get on the scoreboard in the first inning. After Sarah Burnham singled to center, she would steal second, advanced to third, and scored off a wild pitch to give the Pomeroys the early 1-0 lead.
Emma Riffe would put the Pomeroys up 3-0 in the second when she hit a RBI single that drove in two runs. The Pomeroy offense would continue to heat up in the third inning when the Pomeroys would score four runs across the plate. Jordan would get the first run with a sacrifice fly that scored Burnham from third. Shelby Turner would then hit an RBI single that would score Shelby Barnett. Rebecca Latta followed with a 2 RBI double that gave the Pomeroys a 7-0 lead after three innings.
Neither team would score in the fourth, but the game only needed one more inning. In the fifth, Carly Painter would hit a walk-off three-run home run to end the game in five innings. It was her third home run of the season.
For the game, the Pomeroys would score 10 runs off 10 hits and committed 0 errors. Rose-Hulman (13-9) only managed to get one hit and committed 3 errors.
Brooke Jordan was terrific in the circle for the Pomeroys in game one. She picked up her 12th win of the season and currently leads the USCAA in wins. In 5.0 innings pitched, Jordan (12-6) finished with 4 strikeouts, 0 walks, and 0 earned runs off 1 hit.

In game two, the Pomeroy offense would continue to spark. After no score in the first, the Pomeroys would light up the scoreboard in the second inning when they scored seven runs. The first run came when Schuble drove in Painter with an RBI double. Moments later, two more runs would score in the inning after Schuble would score off an infield error and McClain hit an RBI single to give the Pomeroys a 3-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Barnett would hit a sacrifice fly to put the Pomeroys up 4-0. Turner would follow with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Ciara McClain to increase the lead by five runs. The last two runs of the inning came when Painter hit a 2 RBI single to give SMWC a 7-0 advantage after two innings of play.
Rose-Hulman (13-10) would get their only run of the game and the series with a two-out RBI single in the third. The Pomeroys would respond in the bottom of the frame when McClain hit an RBI groundout to put the Pomeroys up 8-1.
Schuble would duplicate what Painter did in the first game and hit a three-run homerun in the fourth inning. It was also her third home run of the season and it gave SMWC an 11-1 lead. Burnham would finish the game in the fifth with her eighth strikeout as the game concluded.
In game two, the Pomeroys would score 11 runs off 9 hits and committed only one error. Rose-Hulman finished with 1 run off 4 hits and committed 2 errors.
Burnham also had a great game in the circle for the Pomeroys. She picked up her ninth win of the season. In 5.0 innings pitched, Burnham (9-7) finished with 8 strikeouts, 0 walks, and 1 earned run off 4 hits.
After today’s victories, the Pomeroy record now sits at 21-13. The Pomeroys will play their next doubleheader on Tuesday, April 22 against USCAA foe Robert Morris-Springfield. This will be the second matchup of the season as the Pomeroys swept Robert Morris in a doubleheader back on March 31. The twin bill will be played on the campus of SMWC with the first of two games beginning at 3:30 p.m.
