Pomeroys sweep Lady Bearcats

The Pomeroy softball team traveled to Owensboro, Ky. and played the Brescia Unviersity Lady Bearcats on Thursday, March 28. The Pomeroys were able to come away with the doubleheader sweep, winning both games by scores of 11-2 and 8-5.

The first inning started with senior Kelsey Rosselli leading off with her 13th double on the season. Unfortunately the next three batters for the Pomeroys were unable to get her across to score. The Lady Bearcats would score one of their two runs in the game with a double, moving a runner over to third base with a ground ball. An error by the Pomeroys on the defensive end led to the Lady Bearcat run.
In the second inning, junior Carly Painter got her second home-run of the season. This tied the ball game up at 1-1.
The third inning is when the Pomeroy bats came alive. Freshman Rebecca Latta and Kimberly Strattman started the inning off with back-to-back walks. Scoring the pair was junior Shelby Barnett with a three-run home-run over the left field fence. To keep the inning alive for the Pomeroys, sophomore Shelby Turner came up to the plate and singled up the middle. Senior Krista Rangel then moved Turner to second base by getting walked while Senior Melinda Bauer doubled to score Turner, moving Rangel to third base. Painter then loaded the bases after she was hit by a pitch. Senior Melana Minning then hit an RBI fly out to left to score Rangel. This extended the Pomeroys lead 6-1. Latta came to the plate for a second time in the inning to walk again, while Rosselli also walked to score Bauer. The inning ended with the Pomeroys up 7-1. The Lady Bearcats were not able to respond with any runs in the third inning.
In the fourth inning, Barnett starting things off by reaching base on a Lady Bearcat error. She would eventually steal second base with Turner up to bat. After Turner was hit by a pitch, Rangel hit a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a base. Bauer would fly out to left field with an RBI to score Barnett, pushing the lead up 8-1.
In the fifth and sixth inning, neither team came up with runs. In the seventh inning, Latta began the inning off with a walk while Rosselli would groundout to advance Latta to second. Strattman reached first with a walk and Barnett doubled to score Latta and move Strattman to third. Turner then singled up the middle to score Strattman. Bauer doubled to left center to score Barnett, leaving the Pomeroy with an 11-1 lead. The Lady Bearcats answered back with a single to the pitcher, then another single to right center field to score the runner. The final scored favored the Pomeroys 11-2.
Dannielle Owens pitched all seven innings with the win. She ended the game with six strikeouts and allowing only nine hits with two earned runs.

Rosselli started off the second game with a walk. She scored when Barnett hit a double up the middle. Senior Jennie Faker shut down the Lady Bearcats on the mound in the first inning with two strikeouts and an unassisted groundout to Strattman at first base.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Pomeroys would strike again with Bauer singling up the middle and Painter getting on base with a walk to follow. Both runners would move on after Minning’s sacrifice bunt. Latta would single up the middle scoring Bauer and advancing Painter to third base. Rosselli would then single to left field, scoring Painter and move Latta which would later score on Barnett’s single to left. This opened up the score in favor of the Pomeroys, 4-1. In the fifth inning, the Lady Bearcats rallied back with one home-run and three base hits. This gave the home side a slight one run lead.
In the sixth inning, SMWC would answer back with a singles by Latta and Rosselli. Scoring Latta was Barnett’s RBI fly out. Next, the Pomeroy bats would load the bases up with two straight walks. Rangel walked to score Rosselli, ending the inning success. The inning concluded with SMWC leading by a score of 6-5.
In the seventh inning, SMWC added on two more runs to end the game with an 8-5 victory.
Faker finished the game with the win. She ended up with four strikeouts and only allowing three earned runs.
The Pomeroys will return to action at home on April 4th against Oakland City University. Game time is set for a 4:30 p.m. start.
