Pomeroys take one of two against Oakland City

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women’s softball team split a doubleheader against the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University on a blustery Thursday afternoon. The Pomeroys fell in the first game 12-6 and were victorious in the second game 6-2.

Oakland City (14-13) would be the first to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first after a walk, single, and RBI double gave the Mighty Oaks a 1-0 lead. Oakland City would plate two more runs off a 2 RBI single by Jacee Parke to put the visitors up by three runs.
Oakland City would tack on one more run in the third before the Pomeroys would make a comeback of their own in the same inning. In the bottom of the third, Ciara McClain would score off a wild pitch and RBI doubles by Shelby Barnett and Carly Painter would get the Pomeroys within one (4-3).
The Mighty Oaks would once again stretch the lead in the fourth with a two-run homerun by Oakland City’s Bre Huff, making the score 6-3. The visitors would score twice in the fifth before the Pomeroys would make their second comeback of the game in the bottom of the inning. An RBI single by Rebecca Latta and a 2 RBI double by Strattman would bring the Pomeroys to within two, trailing 8-6 after five.
Oakland City would score four more runs in the sixth and put the game out of reach for SMWC in the final two innings.
In 7.0 innings pitched, SMWC’s Sarah Burnham (8-5) finished with 9 strikeouts, 3 walks, and 11 earned runs off 13 hits.

In game two, the Pomeroys would be the team to jump out to an early 1-0 lead with a Brooke Jordan RBI single in the first. SMWC would make it 2-0 in the third when Jordan would hit an RBI single that brought home Painter after she singled and stole second base. Kimberly Strattman would plate another run for the Pomeroys in the third with an RBI double of her own. After three innings, the Pomeroys led 3-0.
In the fourth, McClain would score off an RBI single by Barnett to give the Pomeroys a 4-0 advantage. There would be no further scoring until the sixth when SMWC would score twice more with an RBI double by Jordan and an RBI single by Shelby Turner.
Oakland City (14-14) would manage to score two runs across the plate in the seventh, but the Pomeroys would ultimately hang on for the 6-2 victory.
In 7.0 innings pitched, SMWC’s Brooke Jordan (10-5) finished with 6 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 2 earned runs off 3 hits.
With the win, the Pomeroys improved their overall record to 18-10. They also improve their home record to 4-2. They will play their next doubleheader today (Friday) against Purdue University-Calumet. The first of two games is scheduled for a 3 p.m. (EST) start and will be played in Munster, Ind.
