Top teams in USCAA split on Senior Day

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women’s softball team split in its final regular season series against the Lady Lynx of Lindenwood-Belleville on Sunday afternoon. It was a battle of the top two teams in the USCAA with the Pomeroys ranked No. 1 and Lady Lynx ranked No. 2 in the latest USCAA Softball Coaches Poll. SMWC would win the first game 3-1 but fell in the nightcap 6-4. The Pomeroys finished winning three out of four meetings played with the Lady Lynx this season.
SMWC 3 Lindenwood-Belleville 1
Lindenwood-Belleville (21-17-1) would be the first to get on the board in the first inning before the Pomeroy bats would respond in the third. To start the third, Rebecca Latta and Emma Riffe would hit back-to-back singles. Infield errors would cost the Lady Lynx as two miscues scored Sarah Burnham and Shelby Barnett to give the Pomeroys the 2-1 advantage.
There would be no further scoring until the bottom of the fifth when Barnett would hit an RBI double that scored Burnham to increase the SMWC lead 3-1. The Lady Lynx would not threaten the rest of the game and the Pomeroys hung on for the win.
In 6.0 innings pitched, SMWC’s Brooke Jordan (11-6) finished with 3 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 0 earned runs off 3 hits. Jordan currently leads the USCAA in wins as a pitcher.
Lindenwood-Belleville 6 SMWC 4
The Lady Lynx (22-17-1) would take the early lead once again in the nightcap after an RBI single gave the visitors a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. The Pomeroys would respond in the second when Breanna Lange hit a two-out RBI single to give SMWC a 2-1 lead.
Lindenwood-Belleville would earn two runs back in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to right field and a stolen base from third put the visitors up 3-2. SMWC’s Kirby Schuble would help tie the game up in the bottom of the third after her hit scored Burnham from second after another Lindenwood-Belleville infield miscue.
The Pomeroys would take the lead once again in the fifth when Schuble hit an RBI single, scoring Barnett and giving SMWC the 4-3 lead heading into the sixth.
Lindenwood-Belleville would take advantage in a critical sixth inning where they would plate three runs off a two-out 2 RBI double and a fielding error on the Pomeroys. SMWC would not threaten in the last two innings giving the Lady Lynx the game two victory.
In 7.0 innings pitched, SMWC’s Sarah Burnham (8-7) finished with 7 strikeouts, 4 walks, and 5 earned runs off 7 hits.
At the conclusion of today’s doubleheader, Senior Day festivities took place on the field as seniors Shelby Barnett and Carly Painter were honored with their family members, teammates, and coaches. Brooke Jordan was the master of ceremonies and read off memorable moments for each player throughout their SMWC careers. In addition, both seniors had speeches of their own and delighted the crowd with their own kind words.
After today’s matchup, the Pomeroy record now sits at 19-13. The Pomeroys will play their next doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16 against cross-town rival Rose Hulman. The twin bill will be played on the campus of SMWC with the first of two games beginning at 3:30 p.m.
