Clubs and Organizations
At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College there are many exciting clubs and organizations that you can not only join, but take an active leadership role beginning your first semester on campus. Each student’s unique talent is valued at The Woods and we encourage you to share your ideas and energy as an active participant in clubs and organizations. If you do not see a club or organization that fits your interest, speak with the director of Campus Life about creating a new organization.
Archery Club
This club allows students the opportunity for experienced and beginner archers to explore the sport of archery.
Aurora
Aurora promotes, collects, edits and publishes student works of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, photography and art. The Aurora editor is selected by a special publications committee. Other staff members are selected based on interest in arts and literary arts. Everyone is welcome regardless of major.
Chorale
Choral ensemble offers performances of varied repertoire from Pop to Bach and Christmas too, including two major performances per semester. Chorale is open to all SMWC students, staff and faculty--all voices are welcomed!
College Council
The College council is the campus' main legislative body. Some of its regular business includes considering matters affecting the entire College community, setting the College calendar and acting on legislation brought forward by the Student Senate, the Faculty Assembly or the Staff Assembly. Resolutions passed by the College Council require approval by the President of the College to become effective. The Council comprises one representative of the President's Cabinet, one Academic Council representative, two Faculty Assembly representatives, two Staff Assembly representatives, two Student Senate representatives and three at large student representatives. Each constituency elects its own members. The College Council meets approximately every third Thursday at 4 p.m. All meetings are open.
Dance Team
This SMWC team supports sports teams at home games by providing half-time entertainment and showing SMWC pride.
Discovery Club
This club encourages "interest and knowledge in the fields of biology, chemistry, and all sciences, provide new learning experiences and fun activities, and to educate the public about biological issues." The Discovery Club is open to all SMWC students, faculty, and staff.
Drama Club
This club promotes an appreciation of theatre by working on current productions and attending local productions. The Drama Club is open to all SMWC students, staff and faculty--love of theatre is the only requirement!
Peace And Justice
This committee has dedicated itself to the academic and moral search for solutions to the problems of war, violence, and human injustice. It continues in the search for structures to help bring about peace and social justice.
Indiana Legal Assistants at the Woods (InLAW)
InLaw provides a forum for people interested in the law to meet, hear speakers and interact with others in the community who impact the legal profession.
Kappa Delta Pi
Kappa Delta Pi is an international honor society in education. The campus chapter recognizes excellence in education and elects to membership those who exhibit the ideals of scholarship, high personal standards, and promise in teaching and allied professions. Membership includes both WED and campus based students, along with education faculty and community education professionals. Membership is by application and induction in the spring of each academic year.
Math Club
Students enjoy math through fun, energetic and exploratory activities. The math clubs supports students during their senior seminar presentations, participates in sudoku/maze challenges, monthly math challenges, and probability/card night. Membership is open to all SMWC students.
Madrigals
Madrigals are a select choral ensemble with emphasis on exemplary musical performance of classical and contemporary choral repertoire. They participate in a yearly tour and many exciting activities. Membership is by audition only.
Mu Phi Epsilon
Mu Phi Epsilon is a professional music fraternity. Requirements include: One semester of music theory/ear training; a 3.0 cumulative gpa in all music classes; and a 2.5 cumulative gpa in general studies. This fraternity allows women to network with alumnus, have an opportunity to earn scholarships, and make appropriate connections for future job opportunities.
Music Therapy Club
The SMWC Music Therapy Club's (MTC) purpose is to educate and increase awareness of music therapy on the campus and in the community-at-large. The MTC sponsors monthly movie nights, hosts guest speakers on various topics related to music therapy, provides hands-on experiences to the campus during Music Therapy Week, attends professional meetings and conferences, participates in Diversity Week, and completes outreach projects each semester benefiting people in need throughout the Terre Haute community. This club is also open to non-majors.
Phi Alpha Theta History Club
The History Club's purpose is to provide those within the campus community who share an interest in history to be able to gather together for discussions and activities. Members may be any current SMWC student, staff, or faculty members.
Presidential Corps
Presidential Corps acts as the official ambassador group on behalf of the president of the College. Members are elected the preceding spring by an application/interview process.
Psychology Club
The Psychology Club explores issues related to psychology through speakers and activities.
Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) & The Creative Entrepreneur
The Creative Entrepreneur provides a natural outlet for students who wish to gain a better understanding of how the free enterprise system works. Through a series of outreach projects or a small business created by the student, the students will have the opportunity to teach what they have learned to others. Open to all SMWC students.
Student Activities Committee (S.A.C.)
S.A.C. plans and sponsors campus-wide programs such as dances, hypnotists, concerts, comedians, guest lectures and other special events.
Student Senate
The Student Senate is the central organization for student action and provides a means for self-government by and for the student body. Members are elected by the students. All meetings are open.
The Woods Newspaper
Opportunities for involvement include reporting and writing of stories, copy editing, page design and layout, graphic art design, photography, editorial cartoons, advertising sales, marketing, circulation and other business functions.
Worldwide Woodsies
The Worldwide Woodsies mission is to promote domestic and global understanding by recognizing and appreciating the importance of diversity. Any interested campus person is welcome.
