Step-by-Step Procedures for applying for financial aid
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
You need to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1st as you can. You may estimate tax information.
Be sure to keep copies of your taxes and FAFSA answers in case the Office of Financial Aid needs to review them.
Indiana residents should be sure to file prior to March 10th to insure eligibility for Indiana Student Assistance Grants. Late filing will result in the potential lost of grant monies.
Review the Student Aid Report (SAR)
Review the information you receive from the U.S. Department of Education after you complete the FAFSA. Insure this information is accurate. If necessary, follow the instructions to make corrections.
Submit paperwork requested by the Office of Financial Aid
Typically this paperwork includes signed copies of the tax return(s) used for the FAFSA filing and a verification worksheet. Occasionally other documents may be required for verification purposes. Your financial aid administrator will contact you to request these documents, if needed.
Confirm you have been fully admitted to the college
Make sure you are classified as a Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College degree-seeking student. This is required for you to be considered for aid.
Review your financial aid award letter
The letter will show your estimated aid and costs of attending SMWC. If you are declining any awards, please sign and return the award letter, signifying which awards you are declining.
Be sure you understand the conditions of the awards you accept. Contact the Office of Financial Aid if you have any questions or concerns - (812) 535-5100 or email finaid@smwc.edu
Complete the Promissory Note
If you are accepting student loans, complete the required promissory note online at Sallie Mae's website. Detailed instructions are available.
If you receive outside aid or scholarships...
Advise the Office of Financial Aid immediately if you receive an award or financial aid from any other source (such as an outside scholarship). A change in your resources may affect your financial aid.
Remember! You have to reapply for financial aid each year
Feel free to contact the Office of Financial Aid with your questions or concerns - (812) 535-5100 or email finaid@smwc.edu.
