Undergraduate Distance Education
For more than 35 years, the flexible format of the Woods External Degree program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College has worked for thousands of students. This program, and the new Woods Online program (launching January 2010) allow you to earn a college degree while maintaining your job and other responsibilities.
In the Woods External Degree program, you have the opportunity to choose from over 25 majors. You decide how many classes you'll take, and when and where you'll study.
Our NEW fully, online degree program - Woods Online launches in January 2010. Students in the Woods Online program will initially have a choice of two majors. Additional majors will be available in August 2010. Woods Online offers structured and accelerated courses, but still gives you the flexibility to study at your convenience.
Woods External Degree
The Woods External Degree (WED) program uses a variety of assignment submission formats, including by email and through our online course management system. WED provides flexible 16-week semesters. Coursework is completed at your pace and you receive timely feedback from faculty. You fit assignments around your busy schedule.
Woods Online
The Woods Online program uses interactive technology and a virtual classroom environment to provide peer support and feedback. Accelerated 8-week sessions allow you to attend college full-time and graduate in four years or less.

Earn your degree while you work.
With the flexibility to choose when you complete assignments, our distance education programs are ideal for working adults. You are not required to visit our campus. Through our distance education programs, all students - except Education majors - can complete their degree without leaving home. Education majors participate in on-campus educational events at least six times in the course of their studies.
Your job experience may count as college credit.
Have you worked professionally? You are likely eligible to receive college credit for knowledge you have gained through life experience. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College encourages you to consider the options for documenting this knowledge:
- Through our Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) portfolio process, we will review your experience and see if you qualify for APL credit. As a baccalaureate degree-seeking student, you may earn up to 30 hours of credit, saving time and tuition dollars!
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a nationally-recognized testing program: over 30 courses are available through this exam program. SMWC follows the recommendations of the American Council on Education regarding passing scores and credits awarded.
- Military personnel may be familiar with DSST (formerly known as DANTES Subject Standardized Tests). The DSST program offers over 37 examinations in college subject areas that can lead to college credit.
