Pomeroy Pride in the News
SMWC to build $11 million sports, rec center
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College has launched the public phase of an $11 million fundraising campaign to build a new, 36,000-square-foot sports and recreation center. Currently, the college doesn’t have a gymnasium on campus. The College kicked off the Pomeroy Pride campaign Friday with a gala fundraiser at Providence Center.
A local college is looking to add a new place for athletes and non-athletes alike to work out. Saint Mary of the Woods College is planning to build a multi-million dollar facility on campus grounds, which will provide students with an even deeper college experience. The $11 million complex will hold two gymnasiums, a fitness center and locker rooms.
The 36,000 sq. ft. facility will accomodate student athletes, who account for 30% of the student body, but non-athletes and the surrounding community will also benefit. "This project has a lot of potential to energize the Wabash Valley, and help cement Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College's role in the Valley, and help us reach out. We're just excited all around," said President Dottie King, Ph.D.
SMWC blesses rec center ground
With more than half of its $11 million goal raised, officials for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College gathered Friday for a ground blessing of the site expected to house the College’s first sports and recreation center. “While we are not yet breaking the ground, this is may be the most important first step,” SMWC President Dottie King said during the ceremony, “because we know if God does not join our labors, then we are laboring in vain. So it is right and fitting that as a Catholic institution we ask Him to come and bless this ground.”
