Acclaimed artists bring world-class performance to The Woods

Colin Davin and Estelí Gomez

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College brings music of national prominence to campus to inspire, educate and entertain. Two special guest artists join this year’s schedule – Grammy award-winning soprano Estelí Gomez and acclaimed classical guitarist Colin Davin – on Monday, April 25, 2016, at 7 p.m., in the Conservatory of Music.

The soprano and guitarist, respectively, pair up onstage for “Destinations Unknown: Songs of Home and Travel,” featuring an evening of music spanning four centuries and transcending genre. Folk and art songs of Brazil, Germany, France and Spain honor our common love of home and heritage; songs of travel explore our estrangement from homes, loved and lost, and express our deepest yearning for earthly sanctuary.  The audience will experience selections from Manuel de Falla, Federico García Lorca, Federico Mompou, Robert Schumann, Henri Duparc, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Jayme Ovalle.

Celebrated for her artistry and bright voice, Gomez was awarded a 2014 Grammy with vocal octet Roomful of Teeth, for best chamber music/small ensemble performance.  In 2011, she received first prize in the Canticum Gaudium International Early Music Vocal Competition in Poznan, Poland. Gomez can be heard on the JUNO-nominated recording Salsa Baroque with Montréal-based Ensemble Caprice, as well as Roomful of Teeth’s self-titled debut album.

Gomez received her Bachelor of Arts in music from Yale College, and Master of Music from McGill University, studying with Sanford Sylvan. She currently performs full time.

Davin is hailed as one of today’s most dynamic young artists. Highlights of the 2015-16 season include performances at the Ellnora Festival at the University of Illinois; the New York City Classical Guitar Society; a performance with Dawn Upshaw at the Resonant Bodies Festival; and the Cleveland International Guitar Festival.

In 2014, Davin appeared as a featured musical guest on the Late Show with David Letterman alongside soprano Jessye Norman. He has performed at venues across the world, including Carnegie Hall; Alice Tully Hall; the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York Philharmonic Ensembles; the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain; and the Paris Conservatoire, among other venues throughout the United States. He holds numerous top prizes in international competitions, including the Guitar Foundation of American International Solo Competition. He currently serves on the conservatory faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Colin Davin holds a Master of Music from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Sharon Isbin; a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California with William Kanengiser; and preparatory studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Jason Vieaux.
