The Office of the Governor has proclaimed July 23-27, 2012, as Indiana Private College Week. During this special week, all 31 private, nonprofit colleges and universities across the state are opening their campus doors to students, parents, and any others interested in the college selection and admissions process.

A new queen rode into the Putnam County Fair wearing a smile as big as her crown. SMWC sophomore education major and award-winning western equestrian rider Sarah New,from Filmore, Ind., prevailed over 12 other exceptional candidates for the title of Putnam County Fair Queen on July 14, 2012.

Like little Lewis and Clarks, children ages 6-14 traversed the campus from June 25-27, 2012, in one of three new day camps offered at The Woods – robotics, equestrian and nature. Campers in each group enjoyed lunch as well as before and after care. Inside the classrooms, campers used college technology and equipment for experiments and interactive projects. Outside, the children explored SMWC’s beautiful wooded campus.

With a new twist on leadership, MLD students are creating ripples in many prominent Indianapolis companies. Employees from General Electric, Hawker Beechcraft, Hoosier Energy, PepsiCo Frito-Lay, YMCA and a whole charge of forces from Eli Lilly have seized the most recent MLD Indianapolis cohort.

All too often, young women and men dive into a new relationship quickly, seriously and with eyes half open. With this blind leap of faith comes the risk of dating a complete stranger, or worse, a dangerous enemy. Myra Spearman of Gary, Ind., a current Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) student with the Woods Online paralegal studies program, has experienced this vulnerability firsthand.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) has recently been awarded a $15,000 Empowerment Grant from the Motorola Mobility Foundation, for an innovative internship entitled Mobile Museum Developers Using Gamification and Crowdsourcing. For this virtual, multidisciplinary internship, both online and campus students will work together to create a brand new bee exhibit for the not-for-profit Terre Haute Children’s Museum.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, known for distinguished programs with creative techniques in mental health (art therapy and music therapy), will unveil a new minor in the fall of 2012, where undergraduate students can explore the use of horses to promote growth, learning and psychological well-being.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) selected SMWC’s virtual internship as a finalist for its 2012 Innovation Excellence Awards. NACE will announce the winners at their annual conference in La Vegas, Nev., on June 12, 2012.
