Math conference opens eyes of SMWC students

Is math an abstract concept, or a matter of life and death? Three students from Saint Mary-of-the Woods College (SMWC) learned more about the importance of mathematics at the 14th Annual Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln on January 25-27, 2013. This event allows outstanding women undergraduates to mingle with a select group of current women graduate students and professional women in math related fields.

SMWC helps discover the next generation’s top researchers

Who will discover the cure for cancer? Who will develop a renewable source of energy? Who will reach out to touch the farthest star in the universe or gaze at the inner workings of the smallest cell? Maybe it will be an Indiana high school student. Who will encourage that student to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, or math? Perhaps it will be Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

Dressed for Success at SMWC’s Job Boutique

It’s an all-too-common scenario. A recent college graduate faces her first job interview. She opens her closet door and sifts through the jeans, hoodies, and tank tops she owns. She knows it’s important to dress nicely for her interview, but with student debt and a part-time job, she can’t afford a new outfit. What can she do? Thankfully, the Career Development Center at Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) has a solution.

Sustainability Club Talks Trash

Emma Bird is passionate about trash. Or more accurately, as the president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods’ Sustainability Club, she’s passionate about seeing less of it. Along with the other members of the club, Bird, a social science history concentration major from West Terre Haute, Ind., encourages SMWC students to adopt sustainable habits. This semester, the club is involved in several projects both on campus and in the community.

Equine career fair help students prepare for workforce

Workshops, networking, demonstrations, horses and more horses all make up the Mane Event at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). This unique program on March 1, 2013, will provide equine students the opportunity to meet horse enthusiasts as well as prospective employers and to learn about internships, part-time and full-time employment opportunities. There will be a panel discussion moderated by Chris Marks, Ph. D., professor and department chair of equine studies at SMWC, and sessions led by industry professionals offering tips and one-on-one career advice.

The Woods Sign Agreement with Illinois Eastern Community Colleges

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) and Illinois Eastern Community College (IECC) system, have signed articulation agreements providing a seamless path for the community college students to transfer their associate’s degrees to complete a bachelor’s degree at SMWC. The IECC includes Lincoln Trail College, Olney Central College, Wabash Valley College, and Frontier Community College.

SMWC Professor Reinvents an Indiana Classic

How long does it take to compose a song? For John McIntyre, associate professor of music at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, two weeks is plenty of time. McIntyre was asked by James Chesterson, president of the Terre Haute Community Band (THCB) last spring to compose a new arrangement of “Back Home Again in Indiana” for a special “Year of the River” performance, which took place January 27, 2013, at Indiana State University.

This year marks the 27th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. On February 6, 2013, thousands of sports educators, coaches, athletic directors, recreation directors, association members, sponsors, students, and parents across the country will show their support of the Day and of this year's theme, "Girls in Sports, An Investment in the Future."

SMWC students provide free tax assistance

For the fourth year, SMWC participates in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to help low- to moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Through VITA, which is a national program, certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country.
