Reunion 2013

In May of each year, the college opens its doors to welcome back Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) alumnae to campus. Nearly 300 alumnae from France and 26 states returned for Reunion weekend to celebrate, network and reunite with life-long friends and classmates.

Virginia Smith: 2013 Distinguished Alumnae Recipient

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College presented Virginia (Ginger) Smith, a 1989 graduate, with the Distinguished Alumnae Award. The Award is the highest honor the College bestows upon a graduate in recognition of her noteworthy achievements and valuable professional and personal contributions.

SMWC Commencement 2013

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s 173th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4, 2013, symbolized the culmination of students’ academic achievement and personal growth. President Dottie King, Ph.D. presented over 100 students from 23 states with associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degrees.

Students bring awareness by turning trash into art

Sometimes art is beautiful. Other times, it is ugly. The sculpture in front of the Rooney Library at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) contrasts starkly with the flowering trees around it—a disturbing reminder of the blemish illegal dumping leaves on Indiana’s beautiful rivers and wetlands.

Faculty Recognized for Excellence

Three Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College faculty members were recognized with the 24th annual Sister Mary Joseph Pomeroy Faculty Excellence Awards for their high ideals of teaching, scholarship, service and leadership. In 1990, the Sister Mary Joseph Pomeroy Faculty Excellence Award was inaugurated, named in honor of the esteemed Woods professor of English who embodied the highest ideals of teaching, scholarship, and service. Each of this year’s awardees embodies the spirit of excellence, espoused by the College in its motto “Virtus cum Scientia” (Virtue with Knowledge United) in a particular aspect of faculty work. Recipients of this year’s award are Tracy Richardson, Ph.D., professor of music, - for service; Robert Jean, Ph.D., assistant professor of ecology - for scholarship; and Ron Maurey, instructor of music, - for teaching.

North Soccer Standouts Sign With The Woods

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College announces that two soccer standouts, Jordan Bray and Joy Jakaitis, of Terre Haute North High School signed letters of intent to accept soccer scholarships with the Pomeroys.

SMWC Celebrates 173rd Commencement

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College celebrates its 173rd commencement on May 4, 2013. The traditional baccalaureate mass begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The commencement ceremony begins at 2 p.m. in the Cecilian Auditorium of the Conservatory of Music. An estimated 80 students are expected to graduate in the ceremony.

SMWC unveils new opportunities in criminology and healthcare administration

In fall of 2013 Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) will launch two new majors to help students prepare for fulfilling careers in criminology and health care administration. Both Woods Online and campus students will have the ability to enroll in these new degree programs.

Sr. Connie Kramer - A Woman of Influence

The Women of Influence event is designed to identify and recognize top women leaders in the Wabash Valley for their positive influence. This years’ event honored 10 women who make significant contributions to the community. All have influence in the community that extends beyond their organizations. Noted for her ability to offer hope and care for the poor, Sr. Connie Kramer ‘64, SP is one of those remarkable women.

SMWC’s Operation Wabashiki returns for third year

The beautiful Wabashiki. Mist gently swirls around broken trees in gray water, home to thousands of birds, fish…and some old tires, a mattress, and a broken coffee maker. One of Indiana’s newest protected wetlands, the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area, located west of the Wabash River, is often used for illegal dumping. Despite efforts to clean it up and restore its natural beauty, the dumping continues.
