The Couples: (From bottom left to right) Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College students Jaclene Estremera, Madeline McCue, Jacob Wilson and Tobias Inserra play the main characters of The Odd Couple, Female Version.

The classic tale of two mismatched roommates is sure to bring laughter to viewers of an upcoming play at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC).

The SMWC Music and Theatre Department will present The Odd Couple, Female Version, a comedy by Neil Simon, at the Cecilian Auditorium inside the Conservatory of Music, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4-5 and 2 p.m. Nov. 6.

A story of friendship, the play explores the relationship between the slovenly and free-spirited Olive Madison and neat and uptight Florence Unger. A game night becomes exciting when two male visitors arrive.

Theatre Director and Productions Manager Danielle M. O’Connor ’11 said students put many hours into the play’s preparation. This script, presented with special arrangement with Samuel French Inc., was not only chosen because it is a classic but also because it welcomes more male students to participate. SMWC’s campus program went co-ed last year.

Audience members could expect laughter and relaxation from watching the play. “I hope they are able to unplug from the “real world” for a couple hours to just enjoy our fantasy world,” O’Connor said.

The SMWC Music and Theatre Department presents a fall and spring theatre production each year.

Tickets for the fall play are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors and children. SMWC students, faculty and staff admissions are free. Students enrolled in other Wabash Valley colleges also get in for free but would need to present a student ID.

The original Odd Couple, with male characters, premiered in Broadway in 1965. The “female version,” made its debut in 1985.
