Taming of the Shrew, Full Cast

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) Music and Theatre Department proudly presents William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” Feb. 26-March 1, 2015 in the Cecilian Auditorium. A new take on Shakespeare’s classic, “The Taming of the Shrew,” SMWC’s version provides an updated twist to the classic play.

The original play is a comedy that centers on the courtship of Petruchio and Katherina, a headstrong woman, referred to as the “shrew.” Petruchio has to court Katherina who is unwilling to participate in the relationship, in essence “taming” her into an obedient bride. The SMWC Music and Theatre department has added their own plot twist in this rendition.

“I will admit, as Woods woman, I was reluctant to produce a show where the title itself is sexist and archaic in its idea of a woman, or any human being, needing to be tamed or dominated,” states SMWC Theatre Director and Productions Manager Danielle O’Connor, 2011 graduate of SMWC. “But after a lot of research and talking with my colleagues in the department, I realized we can produce the show and send the audience home with an empowering message.”

Of course, theatergoers will have to attend the show to realize the message. However, O’Connor does promise that this updated version of the play will prove relevant to an audience in 2015.
