You’re invited to SMWC: Indiana Private College Week, July 25-29

News | 07.15.2011

Come see for yourself! From Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29, Indiana’s 31 private, nonprofit colleges and universities across the state are throwing open their campus doors to students, parents, and any others involved in the college selection process.  In celebration, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) invites college-bound students and their families to experience firsthand the unique personality of The Woods through campus tours, informational sessions, and conversations with faculty, staff and students.

The liberal arts education at SMWC prepares students for careers by fostering critical thinking, leadership development, problem solving, and an ability to synthesize knowledge from different disciplines.  “We look forward to showcasing the rare combination of characteristics of our student body – a commitment to academics, strong leaders and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to the world,” explained Laura Hale, admission transfer coordinator.

Private College Week is a first for the Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and its member campuses although similar weeks have been held in such states as Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota for some years now.  Although ICI campuses encourage and welcome visitors throughout the year, this concentrated week offers the opportunity to experience one or more campuses in a less formal way during the summer.  It also allows students who may not have ever considered attending one of Indiana’s independent colleges to begin to explore that option.

According to research conducted by Eduventures, 71 percent of high-school students identify the campus visit as the most trusted source of information about acollege.  There’s certainly no better way for students to experience the “feel” of a campus and to discover their “best fit” for college.

“Sometimes, parents and students rule out the possibility of attending one of Indiana’s independent colleges and universities based on preconceived notions about costs, without ever learning about the tremendous financial aid available,” says Richard L. Ludwick, ICI president and CEO.  “We want every student to consider the high-quality academics, personal attention, and higher graduation rates that distinguish our campuses.”
