State scholarship program requires a commitment early; now the colleges are helping, too
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. --- It took a 16-foot rental truck to move the Torline kids into college Tuesday — but it won't take a truckload of cash to pay their way to Indiana University.
Joe and Cheryl Torline and their 19-year-old quadruplets — Eric, Melanie, Allison and Vanessa — drove up from Madison (guys in the truck, ladies in the family van) to begin what they hope will be a four-year journey to a college diploma.
The journey will be paid
for by a unique scholarship program that puts Hoosier students on the
college track as early as middle school, with the promise of free
tuition for financially strapped families with students who promise to
stay in school and out of trouble. And in some cases, colleges are

New Website brings new features, design, and content.

On Thursday, August 28th, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College brought a new website online. The new site, a result of months of research and development, welcomed visitors for the first time late Thursday evening. Features such a blog feeds, interactive calendars, photo galleries, and improved navigation were all part of the launch of the site.

SMWC welcomes largest incoming class since 2003

On Thursday, Aug. 21, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College welcomed 121 new students to its undergraduate campus-based program. This is the College’s largest incoming class since Fall 2003. The group includes 101 freshmen, 19 transfer students and one international student.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) earned the 24th spot among the Best Baccalaureate Colleges — Midwest in the 2009 edition of America’s Best Colleges by U.S.News & World Report, one of the nation’s leading sources of service journalism and news. The exclusive rankings are available online at www.usnews.com/colleges, and they will be published in the magazine’s September 1 issue, on newsstands Monday, August 25.
The Honorable Jean M. Wilkowski is a Diplomat. She was the first woman to be appointed a U.S. Ambassador to Africa, she headed the U.S. Embassy in Zaire, and during her 35-year diplomatic career, fluency in French, Spanish and Italian enabled her to serve in the capitals of Europe and Asia as well as postings in Africa and South America.
On Sept. 18, Wilkowski will return to her alma mater, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), to kick off the College’s 2008-2009 Four-Star Series with a talk entitled “From The Woods to the World, a 35-year Diplomatic Career in the US Foreign Service.” Wilkowski’s presentation, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18 in the Cecilian Auditorium of the SMWC Conservatory of Music.
New SMWC Promise Grant to support state initiative to make college education more affordable

To show support for the Hoosier College Promise, a proposal unveiled by Gov. Mitch Daniels to make a college education more accessible and affordable for Hoosier high school graduates, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) President David G. Behrs, Ph.D., has announced the creation of the SMWC Promise Grant.
SMWC hires Jacki Switzer as Director of Financial Aid

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College has hired Jacki Switzer to serve as the College's Director of Financial Aid. Switzer's first day at SMWC was July 1.
Jennie Mitchell, Ph.D., professor of business at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), presented “Virtual Team Play” at the 2008 National Student Leadership Conference. The conference was hosted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) July 17-20 in Indianapolis, Ind., which is the national headquarters of the NFHS.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College raises $1.1 million, breaking all-time giving record for Annual Woods Fund

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College celebrated another successful fundraising year with $1,147,264 million in gifts to the Annual Woods Fund during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2008 – a 13.8 percent increase over last year's record of $1,008,115 million. SMWC President David G. Behrs, Ph.D., said broad participation by the College's alumnae/i, parents and friends accounted for the results.

Janet Clark, assistant professor of chemistry at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, presented “Easing the Pain of Chemistry for Non-Majors by Using Learning Objects” at the 20th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education, July 27-31.
