State scholarship program requires a commitment early; now the colleges are helping, too

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. --- It took a 16-foot rental truck to move the Torline kids into college Tuesday — but it won't take a truckload of cash to pay their way to Indiana University.

Joe and Cheryl Torline and their 19-year-old quadruplets — Eric, Melanie, Allison and Vanessa — drove up from Madison (guys in the truck, ladies in the family van) to begin what they hope will be a four-year journey to a college diploma.

The journey will be paid for by a unique scholarship program that puts Hoosier students on the college track as early as middle school, with the promise of free tuition for financially strapped families with students who promise to stay in school and out of trouble.
