Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), a Catholic women’s college in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind., has created a new scholarship to make private college education more affordable for Vigo County Catholic students.

“SMWC’s foundress, Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, was a woman well ahead of her time who impacted countless lives. She was an entrepreneurial leader who was passionate about educating women and preparing them to become leaders,” said SMWC President David G. Behrs, Ph.D. “In these challenging economic times, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College wants to ensure that a quality, private college education is still within reach for today’s Catholic student leaders, so we have created the Vigo County Catholic Student Scholarships.”

The new Vigo County Catholic Student Scholarships are valued at $11,000 a year, which is nearly 50 percent off the cost of tuition! The scholarship will be applied towards the cost of attendance for students who are admitted and enroll in the campus-based program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Awards are automatically renewable for up to 4 years, but students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to meet renewal criteria.

The Vigo County Catholic Student Scholarships cannot be combined with other campus merit scholarship awards, but students may be eligible for partial-tuition Athletic Scholarships, Performing and Visual Arts Scholarships and need-based financial aid (need determined based on the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid – FAFSA).

To qualify for the Vigo County Catholic Student Scholarship, a student must:
•    Be a Vigo County resident and have a valid Vigo County address
•    Be of the Catholic faith
•    Meet all campus admission criteria
•    Be a high school senior or a transfer student from any Vigo County school or local college (Vigo County home-school students are also eligible to apply)
•    Apply for admission before May 1, 2009
•    Complete and return the Vigo County Catholic Student Scholarship form (available online at www.smwc.edu). The document must be signed by a Vigo County Catholic Priest or Parish Life Coordinator to certify that the student is a baptized Catholic.

Founded in 1840 by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and the Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is the oldest Catholic liberal arts college for women in the United States. Today, SMWC thrives by offering a rich liberal arts education, scholarships and financial aid opportunities to make college affordable, individual attention, a value-centered education in a Catholic tradition, and a wide variety of student leadership activities. In fact, both Princeton Review and U.S.News & World Report rank SMWC as one of the Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the Midwest.

The College is committed to making private higher education affordable. Approximately 95% of campus-based undergraduate students at SMWC receive academic or need-based financial aid, and this year alone, the College will grant approximately $3.3 million in institutional aid to students in our campus-based, Woods External Degree (WED) and graduate programs. The College offers merit scholarships for freshmen, transfer and international students; athletic scholarships; visual and performing arts scholarships; Ivy Tech Community College Grants; Graduate Student need-based grants; and Vigo County Catholic Student Scholarships. We have also recently made a financial commitment to the men and women who have served our country by creating a $3,000 scholarship for military service personnel who have served on active duty.
