The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble will present a free concert on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Cecilian Auditorium of the SMWC Conservatory of Music Building. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Jazz Band will perform selections including “Stormy Weather,” “Satin Doll” and “Take the A Train.” SMWC senior Valerie Higbee will also join the Jazz Band as the featured vocalist on “It's Only a Paper Moon,” “Don't Get Around Much Anymore,” and “Summertime.”

The Wind Ensemble will be performing “The Washington Post March” and the Finale from “Symphony in F minor, No. 4” by Peter Tchaikovsky. In addition, the SMWC Chamber Winds, a select group gleaned from the Wind Ensemble, will perform 3 movements from Mozart's “Serenade in Eb major for 8 winds.”

“Combining these groups on a single concert, allows the Music and Theatre Department to serve up a varied repertoire ensuring something for everyone,” said Steve Prescott, director of the ensembles and assistant professor of music at SMWC. “Val Higbee is a wonderful vocalist who captures the style of each work she sings.”

The Music and Theatre Department at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College offers a variety of music and theatre degrees, including the bachelor of arts degree in music and the bachelor of arts in women and theatre. It also offers the bachelor of science in music therapy and the bachelor of arts in music education (all-level, all-area). The College also offers a master’s degree program in music therapy. The music programs at The Woods are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The Music Therapy programs are approved by the American Music Therapy Association and the Music Education program is approved by the Indiana Department of Education.
