The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Soccer Team placed second in the the USCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship Nov. 8 in Burlington, VT.
The Pomeroys were seeded 8th in an 8-team field but worked their way up to the title match, by defeating Southern Virginia University, the defending champions, and the New Hampshire Technical Institute. In the final match, SMWC was defeated by the Marygrove Mustangs of Detroit, MI.
“SMWC won many honors in the tournament and modeled the kind of character and sporting behavior that a college with values like The Woods should always put first,” said SMWC Soccer Coach Michael Aycock.
Junior Erin Pugh of Terre Haute, Ind., and Junior April Baranowski of Arlington Heights, Ill., were named to the all-tournament team. Senior Arrika Garcia of Dayton, Ohio, was named an Honorable Mention in the All-American awards. Four team members were named to the All-Academic team: Junior Emily Contreraz of Greenfield, Ind.; Junior Maureen Brown of Niles, Mich.; Junior Britt Simmerman of Oolitic, Ind.; and Junior Erin Pugh of Terre Haute.
“Hoisting the silver cup is a giant step forward for the Pomeroy soccer program,“ said Aycock. ”They played their best soccer of the season.”
