SMWC to Suspend Camp at The Woods for 2009
Posted on: 01/23
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) announced today that declining registration numbers and current economic conditions have prompted the College to suspend Camp at The Woods operations.
Camp at The Woods, a summer residential camp for boys and girls age 7-14, has been a tradition at Saint Mary-of the-Woods College for 27 years. However, in recent years, the Camp has seen a decline in registration numbers, which has yielded negligible profits. This, combined with the current economic crisis facing the nation and this region, led College officials to the decision to suspend Camp at The Woods operations.
“For the last 27 years, Camp at The Woods has provided young people with the opportunity to visit SMWC and make friends and memories that last a lifetime, so making the decision to suspend the Camp was not easy,” said Julie White, director of conferences and non-credit programs at SMWC “I want to thank everyone who has participated in our camps throughout the years, and I want to express my appreciation to our dedicated staff who have worked so hard to create camps that are safe, fun and educational.”
White said that while it is not out of the question for Camp at The Woods to return to SMWC, there are no plans to resume operations in the near or foreseeable future.
The Office of Conferences and Non-Credit Programs coordinates facility rental, conferences, camps, events, and non-credit programs for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. If you would like information about reserving a building or room for a special event, contact White at 812-535-5149 or woodscamp@smwc.edu.

We just found aflyer tht ahd the camps and both kids got so excited. SO we were planning on sending both our kids this year.
I know a lot of people that are thinking about keeping things close to home.
Our little ones is just now old enough to attend camps and when she saw the horse camp she got so excited. My boy loves cartoons and
wants to learn animation.
So sad I remember my summer camps good time and great learning.
do you know if there is any other animation camps out there

My daughter has attended camp the last two summers and will be disappointed that she will not be able to attend this year. She was looking forward to her time at St Mary's and even thought about spending the whole week!
I would also like to add that even though times are tough, I was not going to cut summer camp out of my budget.

We can not tell you what a disappointment this is for our entire family. Our oldest daughter has been going to camp since she was in the third grade and this would have been her first year as a counselor in training. The staff, Rosie, John, Deanne and everyone else have been fixtures in our girls lives all these summers. The programs were fantastic.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods needs to remain a special place where memories are made, not just another college. So what if it was less than profitable? There are other ways to work profit in. This is a huge mistake made by people who must be looking only at the bottom line.
