Abstract:  In 1973, SMWC launched the Women’s External Degree Program, the nation’s second distance learning program. Founded by the Sisters of Providence in 1840, SMWC is the oldest, premier Catholic liberal arts college for women in the United States. For almost two centuries the College has been enabling students to develop their abilities, think critically, communicate responsibly, engage in lifelong learning and leadership and effect positive changes in a global society.

SMWC’s bold vision to educate students of all ages with an appetite for knowledge is evident in the delivery of its online programs. In 2005, the Women’s External Degree Program became co-ed and is now known as the Woods Online Program. Over 35 majors are offered in the online program in two distinct formats – an extended 16-week format and an accelerated 8-week format.
