Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) junior Isabella Monnett, of Greencastle, Ind., was one of 33 students nationwide to receive a scholarship from the EQUUS Foundation.

Monnett was awarded the $2,500 Samantha Calzone Memorial Scholarship. The award goes to an undergraduate or graduate-level student enrolled in an equine studies program at an institution of higher learning listed on the EQUUS Foundation’s Equine Education Network who is a current member of the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA).

“This scholarship is from a mission-driven institution—focusing on protecting horses and strengthening the bond between horses and humans with education, empowerment and inspiration—that helps build my resume while also being a source of financial support for my academic endeavors,” Monnett said. “By easing financial stress, it allows me to fully invest in my education and focus on creating a lasting impact in the equine industry—both during my time on campus and in my future career.”

Monnett is captain of SMWC’s western IHSA team, an academic peer and riding instructor and is on track to earn her degree in equine science with a minor in equine breeding management in 2027. In the long term, she hopes to establish a small breeding and training facility with a family-like environment, where she can offer individualized attention to each horse and client.

“(Monnett) is one of our best students,” said Ed Ferguson, Ph.D., Monnett’s advisor and chair of SMWC’s equine department. “She makes excellent grades, is always willing to help and volunteers for learning opportunities.”
