Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) has announced the first-year recipients of the College’s highest student award for academic excellence, service and faith.

The College awards Saint Mother Theodore Guerin (SMTG) Scholarships at different levels. One student will receive up to full tuition and $4,000 toward the cost of a room in Le Fer Hall. Three students may receive up to full tuition, and up to 10 students may receive $23,000 in tuition coverage.
Eligible applicants must be enrolled as a full-time, campus-based student in a degree-seeking program. They must also demonstrate unique experiences, a desire to make a difference in their communities and have at least a 3.2 high school GPA. In addition to meeting high standards on campus, each cohort member must complete a specified number of service hours.
“I am so blessed, in my capacity as the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship coordinator, to work with students at the top of their games,” said Tim Tesmer, SMWC’s campus minister. They are not only academically proficient, but upstanding individuals as well. They are marked by the high quality of their leadership, service, spirituality and scholastic excellence.”
Senior Callee Riggle, of Roachdale, Ind., said her love for children led her to major in elementary education (K-6) and apply for the SMTG Scholarship.
“I love her saying, ‘Love the children first, then teach them’. It really goes even beyond the classroom,” Riggle said. “Her legacy scholarship is rewarding and a real honor to receive, especially because it’s made me part of this tight-knit community of scholars.”
Senior SaraGrace Toney, who is part of the Scholars leadership council, said the program has helped her grow her faith, leadership abilities and commitment to education.
“Saint Mother Theodore was committed to a quality education for women, which is what I am receiving here at SMWC and as a part of the SMTG program,” said Toney, a biology major from Greenwood, Ind. “I believe the most important thing I can emulate from Saint Mother Theodore is her loving heart, faith and willingness to serve others. I hope throughout my time at SMWC, and as a part of the SMTG program, I show these same things toward others and, most importantly, serve God by putting my faith into action to continue her legacy.”
