Leadership Academy of West Central Indiana Launches to Empower Future Regional Leaders

News | 04.17.2025

A new era of leadership development is beginning in West Central Indiana with the launch of the Leadership Academy of West Central Indiana.

The Leadership Academy aims to serve emerging leaders across West Central Indiana by offering a robust curriculum focused on leadership (personal, corporate and community-focused), communication, productive conflict, effective teamwork and critical and strategic thinking.

The origin of The Leadership Academy is the Wabash Valley Leadership Institute, which began in 2014. The founders of that program were Rachel Leslie and Susan Turner as part of their thesis to earn their Master of Leadership Development degrees at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). The College and Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce collaborated to implement the program and, since 2014, have had 13 cohorts and 166 graduates. It was designed as an intensive week-long program on the campus of SMWC. Since COVID, there was a realization by SMWC and the Chamber that a new model needed to be devised to fit the needs of participants and businesses.

“The Leadership Academy of West Central Indiana was designed with the region’s future in mind. The Leadership Academy will help emerging leaders unlock their potential, empowering them to lead boldly while leaving a positive, lasting impact on our region,” said Josh Alsip, VP Regional Engagement for the West Central Indiana Partnership.

Program highlights include:

  • Monthly meeting formats (September – May)
  • A variety of learning formats, including case studies, site visits, workshops, seminars and hands-on leadership training
  • Networking opportunities with regional leaders enrolled in the program, local and state elected officials and business and community leaders
  • Master of Leadership Development degree credit hours from educational partner, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College

The Leadership Academy application is now open through noon on May 15, 2025. Professionals, educators, entrepreneurs and anyone with a passion for leadership are encouraged to apply.

“By investing in talent development and retention, we are shaping a stronger, more vibrant future for our region’s businesses,” said Alsip.
