SMWC Department of Equine Studies spreads Christmas cheer with yearly Equine Holiday Ride

News | 12.12.2023

As a beloved tradition for decades, faculty and seniors in the Equine Studies program participated in the annual Equine Holiday Ride. Per tradition, the ride takes place on the Monday before finals, also known as Study Monday.

Students, faculty and staff participating in the event ride around campus on horseback to each building and sing Christmas carols. Teah Taylor, a current senior in the program, shared that she feels the ride has become a staple at SMWC. “I think it really bonds the entire campus of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. It’s an event that the department offers not only to the College campus but also to the whole community we have out here,” Taylor said.

Although the caroling starts around 9 a.m., the day begins earlier for the riders. All participants gather at the barn to “dress up” their horse in festive items like Santa hats, tinsel and more. There were 13 participants this year, including Little Onyx, SMWC’s live mascot.
