On Saturday, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College welcomed 45 incoming freshmen to campus to compete for the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin (SMTG) Scholarship.
As the highest award for academic excellence, service and faith, the SMTG Scholarship is presented to exceptional applicants who embody the principles by which the College’s foundress, Mother Theodore Guerin, lived and served.
“Interviews are a large portion of the evaluation process for prospective SMTG Scholars,” said Chris Lozier, associate vice president for enrollment management. “SMTG Scholars are selected because they embody the values of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and are entrusted with preserving and advancing her legacy.”
One student will receive up to full tuition and $4,000 toward the cost of a room in Le Fer Hall. Three students may receive up to full tuition, and up to 10 students may receive $23,000 in tuition coverage.
First-time freshmen nationwide who have used their unique experiences, aptitudes and abilities to make a difference in their local communities and beyond are encouraged to apply for the scholarship.

Each student takes part in a 20-minute, in-person interview with a panel composed of a faculty member, staff member and a current SMTG scholar. In the next weeks, virtual interviews will be conducted with an additional 20 students who cannot attend the on-campus interviews.
To be eligible, students must be enrolled as full-time campus-based students in a degree-seeking program. They must also demonstrate unique experiences, a desire to make a difference in their communities and prove academic excellence by maintaining at least a 3.2 high school GPA.
In addition to being held to a high standard on campus, each cohort member is required to complete a specified number of service hours.
