Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College mourns the loss of two beloved Sisters of Providence who made a significant impact on the institution through their leadership.
Barbara Doherty, Ph.D., SP ’53 served as president of the College from 1984-1998. Sister Barbara, who made such an impact in the lives of many alumni, was known as a theologian, leader who sought collaborations on behalf of higher education locally and nationally and for establishing scholarship athletics at the College. She was honored by the College with the Saint Mother Theodore Medallion in 1992, as a Distinguished Alumna in 2015 and as an inaugural member of the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.
Joan Slobig SP ’64 served the College throughout her life in various positions. She was dean of admission from 1971-1975, assistant professor from 1980-1986 and trustee from 1999-2008 and from 2019 to present. She worked tirelessly as the parish life coordinator for St. Mary’s Village Church in her later years, always connecting the Village with the College’s religious programming, keeping her connected to the lifeblood of the institution – its faculty, staff and students.
Sister Barbara died on Monday, Aug. 17. Sister Joan both passed away on Sunday, Aug. 16.
“Sister Barbara and Sister Joni have such a special place in our hearts at The Woods,” said Dottie King, Ph.D., president. “My prayers go out to our family – our alumni and members of our community – who were the beneficiaries of their good works, leadership and passion for everything this institution stands for. We have been so blessed by them.”
